Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Returns to Old Town!

The many facets of Mexican culture will be showcased during Lewisville’s third annual street festival in celebration of Cinco de Mayo on Sunday, May 1, from 1 to 6 p.m. on Mill Street between Main and Whatley in Old Town.

Organized by the Old Town Business Association and the Dallas Tortilla and Tamale Factory, the event will include music, food, arts and crafts, a car show and more.  The event is being supported by the City of Lewisville and sponsored in part by the Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Mayor Gene Carey said the festival is a way to reach out to the city’s growing Hispanic population while involving the entire community in celebration of a shared heritage.

“This is going to be one terrific party,” Carey said. “People won’t want to miss the music and the dancing, and especially the great food.  It’s been on my calendar for months.”

Scheduled entertainment features local singers and dance groups with performances that will span centuries of Mexican culture.

Manzanilla Flamenca will perform classic dances from Spain, the Dallas Aztec Dancers will demonstrate ritual dances developed by the Native American tribe that once ruled central Mexico, and the Lewisville High School Ballet Folklorico and Old Town Lewisville Ballet Folklorico both will perform traditional Mexican dances in authentic costumes.

Local singer Tyler Marco will return to Old Town Lewisville to follow up a successful appearance at Western Day last September, and headline entertainment will be provided by Bobby & the Blue Notes at 4:30 p.m.

Although there is no admission to the event, visitors are asked to make a donation of at least $1 to the Cinco De Mayo Scholarship Fund or canned goods for Christian Community Action.  Festival organizers hope to raise enough money to present at least two $500 college scholarships to Lewisville ISD students of Mexican descent.

The 2003 scholarship recipient, Marisol Martinez of Lewisville High School, is currently attending the University of North Texas in Denton. Two students received scholarships last year. Juan Carlos Carrillo of Marcus High School is a student at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, and Adriana Patricia Martinez from The Colony High School attends Brookhaven College in Dallas.

Cinco de Mayo is a commemoration of the Battle of Puebla, which was fought on May 5, 1862.  On that day, an army of 4,000 Mexican nationalists defeated a French-commanded army of more than 8,000 men.  That victory launched a campaign that eventually drove the French out of Mexico and restored Mexican independence.  Click here for more information.

“Cinco de Mayo is a great way for all Americans -- and especially Texans to -- celebrate the victory at Puebla. Not only did that one battle affect the future of Mexico but that of America as well,” said event chairwoman Rebecca Behnke.

“Today we celebrate Cinco de Mayo in memory of those soldiers who fought, but also as a way to come together as a community. Whether you are brown, black or white, Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate. We hope to see all of Lewisville there!”

Festival sponsors include Lewisville State Bank, Dallas Tortilla & Tamale Factory, Andes Metal Processors, Precision Screen Printing, Mail & More, R.S. Printing, and JMG Enterprises.
