Cinco de Mayo festival moving to Main Street for
2009
Cinco de Mayo, Old Town Farmers Market ready to celebrate Spring on
Saturday, May 30, 2009.
Lewisville’s seventh annual Cinco de Mayo, and the start of the fourth
season of the Old Town Farmers Market, will come together on Saturday,
May 30, to welcome Spring with a free family celebration on Main Street
in the heart of Old Town Lewisville.
The blended event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature
the cultural sounds and tastes of Cinco de Mayo along with the vendors
and environmental displays of the Old Town Farmers Market Kickoff.
“Spring is always a good time to get outside and spend some time with
family and neighbors, and that is what both of these events are all
about,” said Lewisville Mayor Gene Carey. “I’m going to be out there to
enjoy some good food, listen to great music and pick up a basket of
fresh tomatoes. I encourage everyone to come on out there with me.”
Cinco de Mayo
Organized by Dallas Tortilla and Tamale Factory and sponsored by the
City of Lewisville, the Cinco de Mayo festival will include live music
and dance performances, food, arts and crafts, vehicle displays,
children’s activities and more. Vendor and sponsor applications are
being accepted now.
The festival was moved to Main Street last year and drew one of its
largest crowds ever, with about 2,000 people coming to Old Town for the
event.
The event is free to the public. Visitors are asked to make a donation
of $1 to the Cinco De Mayo Scholarship Fund, or bring canned food and
household paper goods for Christian Community Action. Festival
organizers hope to raise enough money to present at least two $500
college scholarships to graduating Lewisville ISD students of Mexican
descent. Eleven scholarships have been awarded during the past six
years.
Cinco de Mayo is a commemoration of the Battle of Puebla, which was
fought on May 5, 1862. On that day, an army of 4,000 Mexican
nationalists defeated a French-commanded army of more than 8,000 men.
That victory launched a campaign that eventually drove the French out of
Mexico and restored Mexican independence (which is celebrated in Mexico
on Sept. 16). Many historians also credit the victory in Puebla
with keeping the French army in Mexico from joining the Confederate
forces in the Civil War.
Festival volunteers are needed to help in several areas of the event.

Old Town Farmers Market
The 2009 season for the Old Town Farmers Market will open on May 30 and
run through Oct. 3, opening each Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until noon
at Wayne Ferguson Plaza (North Poydras and Main). The kickoff on May 30
will re-introduce the public to market vendors and also will support a
“green” message through interactive displays and events.
Cinco de Mayo organizer Rebecca Behnke said blending the two events will
appeal to a wide range of visitors looking to celebrate Spring and enjoy
Old Town Lewisville.
“I think the people of Lewisville know about Cinco de Mayo and while the
Farmers Market event is a newer event to the citizens of Lewisville, it
is a natural fit,” Behnke said. “I’m also very excited about going
‘green’ with the event and hope we can make an impact in our city,
educating and showing people how they can lessen their carbon footprint
in Lewisville.”

Rebecca Leal Behnke (Dallas Tortilla and Tamale Factory)
is busy planning for this year's Lewisville Cinco De Mayo event to be
held in Old Town on Saturday, May 30, 2009. She is recruiting volunteers.
Here is the info she provided. If you are interested in volunteering,
contact Rebecca as soon as possible:
"We are in need of volunteers, particularly for our ''Tavern & Cantina'
aspect of the event. I thought some of our wonderful Chamber members
would be perfect for that. That would entail standing at the
entrance/exit gates and giving the "drink up or throw away" line.
Call Rebecca at 972.436.4333 if you would like to volunteer that day.
