WORLD TAMALE EATING CHAMPIONSHIP
AT BASSMASTER TOURNAMENT
Some of the world’s finest eaters will converge in
Lewisville, TX on June 4, 2005 at 1:00pm for the first annual World
Tamale Eating Championship, sponsored by the Lewisville Visitors Bureau
and the Old Town Business Association of Lewisville. This title,
respected for its elusiveness as much as the impending fame due its
possessor, will be accompanied by a $1,000.00 first place prize.
The tamale eating record that will be set will join elite marks such as
Sonya Thomas’ 11 lbs of cheesecake in nine minutes, Eric Booker’s 48
donuts in eight minutes, and, perhaps most notably, Don ‘Moses’ Lerman’s
mark of six lbs of baked beans in one minute and 48 seconds.
"The ability to eat tamales in mass quantity fell out of favor in the
late 20th Century, and those with skill in this area found that they
were not celebrated by the public," said George Shea, Chairman of the
International Federation of Competitive Eating. "However, in the first
five years of the new century, tamale-eating has experienced a
resurgence in popularity. This rebirth will culminate in Lewisville, TX
on June 4, 2005."
The contest will be part of the Bassmaster Elite 50 Fishing Tournament
taking place on Lake Lewisville outside of Dallas, TX. Dallas Tortilla
and Tamale Factory in Lewisville, TX will be donating the delicious
tamales to the contest. The IFOCE will handle eater registration. Spots
are available, and interested eaters over the age of 18 should call
212.627.5766 or sign up online at
www.ifoce.com .
Interested parties are also encouraged to visit

The contest will be preceded by a neat-eating contest for children,
which will begin at 12:30pm. Registration for the neat eating contest
will done onsite on a first come first served basis.
The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), the
governing body of all stomach-centric sports, conducts more than 70
events annually, including the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July
International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, N.Y. The
competitive eating community, which numbers more than 3,000 veteran and
rookie athletes, travels the nation in search of top titles and the
glory that they provide. |
